Starting Reception

Starting school is a big step and we are keen to work with families to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Once places have been allocated and parents and the school has been notified, we quickly get welcome letters sent out to let parents know about induction events.

During the Summer term:

  • Evening meeting for parents and carers - meet some of the staff, hear how you can prepare for your child starting school
  • Stay and play session, with parents and carers - half the cohort at a time in 2 sessions to enable the children to become familiar with the classroom setting. Parenet/carers can either stay or leave
  • Liaison between the EYFS teachers and nurseries during the Summer Term
  • Lunchtime teddy bear's picnic

Start of the Autumn term:

  • All children start full time, but a maximum 3 days for the first week, making individual adaptions where required
  • We hold a meeting in September to meet the teacher and to give parents and carers more information about the curriculum and how they can support at home, with a focus on phonics and reading.

Starting Beacon Hill Primary School at all other times

Should a child be joining us in a different year group in September or at any other time of the year, we strongly encourage parents to arrange a visit to tour the school and meet their child’s new teacher prior to the start date. If necessary, children may be offered one or more opportunities to visit and spend time in their new classes before formally commencing. We also coordinate with the child’s previous school as required to ensure a seamless transition. In most instances, children integrate quickly into their new environment, receiving a warm welcome from both staff and peers.
