Phonics
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is the phonics programme we use to teach children how to read and spell. It gives a clear, step-by-step structure so that all children can build their skills with confidence from the very start
INTENT:
We aim to ensure that all children develop strong early reading and spelling skills from the very beginning. Through a structured and systematic approach, children build confidence as they learn the links between sounds and letters. We want every child to become a fluent reader who enjoys reading and is well-prepared for the next stage of their learning.
IMPLEMENATATION:
- Phonics is taught daily through short, focused lessons with a consistent structure.
- Children learn sounds and letters in a clear, carefully planned sequence.
- They are taught to blend sounds to read words and segment words to support spelling.
- All staff use the same language and routines to provide consistency across the school.
- Reading books are closely matched to the sounds children have learned so far.
- Regular assessments help identify any gaps in learning.
- Additional “keep-up” sessions are provided for children who need extra support.
- Parents and carers are supported with guidance and resources to help at home.
IMPACT:
As a result, children become confident, fluent readers who can apply their phonics knowledge independently. They are able to read accurately, spell with increasing confidence, and develop a positive attitude towards reading. By the end of Key Stage 1, children are well-equipped with the essential skills they need for future learning.
