Reading

Choose a subject

INTENT:

Our aim is to develop confident, enthusiastic readers who see reading as both an essential skill and a source of enjoyment. We provide a rich range of reading opportunities across the curriculum so that children experience different types of texts, genres and purposes for reading. We want all children to develop a love of books, build strong comprehension skills, and use reading to support their learning in all subjects.

IMPLEMENTATION:

We carefully select high-quality, appropriately challenging texts to engage and inspire our children. Reading is taught both as a discrete skill and across the wider curriculum, allowing children to apply their understanding in meaningful contexts. Teachers model fluent, expressive reading and support children to develop key skills such as decoding, vocabulary understanding, and comprehension.

Children take part in regular reading sessions, including guided reading, whole-class reading, and opportunities for independent reading. Classrooms promote a reading-rich environment, and children are encouraged to read widely and often, both in school and at home. Support is provided for those who need it, ensuring all children can access texts and make progress.

IMPACT:

Through this approach, children develop into confident, independent readers who can read with fluency and understanding. They are able to discuss texts, make connections, and use reading to deepen their knowledge across the curriculum. Most importantly, children leave our school with a genuine enjoyment of reading and the skills they need to continue reading for pleasure and to support their future learning.
